Päivi Tahkokallio, President of BEDA (2019-2021), the Bureau of European Design Associations, with 47 member organisations in 25 European countries, leading the creation of next generation design policy for Europe. She is also the founder and CEO of Tahkokallio Design+, a design thinking and strategic design agency from Lapland, north Finland.

With her track record of strategic and social design she has been called ‘the mother of Arctic design;’ a design approach to support the sustainable development of the Arctic. She has extensive experience in the inclusive approach to design through her earlier career at the University of Art and Design Helsinki (now Aalto ARTS) and the National R&D Centre for Healthcare and Wealth, and through leading the European Design for All networks.

Päivi is the chair of the Design Committee of Lapland Chamber of Commerce, an advisor to the Board of Ornamo Art and Design Finland, and a fellow of the Royal Society of Arts in the UK.

Gregoire Bisson heads the Hague Registry at the World Intellectual Property Organization (Geneva). In this capacity, he is directly responsible for the management and development of the Hague Agreement for the international registration of industrial designs. His previous positions with WIPO included heading the Legal Service, supporting the development of and operations under the Madrid, Hague and Lisbon systems.

Mr Bisson joined WIPO in 1995 after a short stint with the Canadian Trademarks Opposition Board. Before that, he was Senior Legal Advisor with the Government of Canada, developing intellectual property policies and overseeing in particular the drafting of the TRIPS implementing legislation. At the same time, he was lecturing at the University of Ottawa on the legal aspects of transfer of technology. He has co-edited a book on this topic, and has published and contributed to many articles on various IP issues.

Franco Caimi is a board member of Caimi Brevetti, one of the world’s leading manufacturers of designer furniture, accessories and acoustic systems for the workplace and contract furniture markets. He is the Companies Department Coordinator of ADI-Associazione per il Disegno Industriale (Association for Industrial Design) and a member of Giurì del Design (Jury of Design). Caimi Brevetti is a leading company in terms of design innovation; the firm’s products have been displayed in museums and in design exhibitions in Italy and around the world. The company has won many awards since its foundation in 1949, including two Compasso d’Oro awards. Caimi Brevetti won the DesignEuropa Award 2016 in the Small and Emerging Companies category.

António Campinos is the President of the European Patent Office (EPO), a post he has held since 1 July 2018. A Portuguese national with a Master in Public Law and advanced European studies, he began his career in the Portuguese Ministry of Economy and Innovation in 1998. He was appointed Trade Mark Director of the Portuguese National Institute of Industrial Property (INPI) in 2000, and was elected its President in 2005. From 2005 to 2007 he headed the Portuguese Delegation to the Administrative Board of the European Union Intellectual Property (EUIPO), subsequently serving as its Chairman from 2008 to 2010. In parallel (from 2005 to 2010) he was head of the Portuguese Delegation at the Administrative Council of the EPO. In 2010, António Campinos was elected Executive Director of the EUIPO in Alicante (Spain), a position he held until June 2018.

Mr Campinos also served a five year term as President of the Administrative Council of the Centre d'Études Internationales de la Propiété Intellectuelle (CEIPI) at the University of Strasbourg. He was awarded the title of Doctor Honoris Causa from the University of Alicante in 2017.

Lin-Lin Chen is a dean, full professor and the chair of Design Innovation Strategy in the Department of Industrial Design, and the director of International Scientific Relations at Eindhoven University of Technology, the Netherlands. She is also a professor in the Department of Design at Taiwan Tech. She received her BSc from National Cheng Kung University, Taiwan, and her PhD from the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, Michigan, USA. She was dean of the College of Design at Taiwan Tech from 2004 until 2010, president of the Chinese Institute of Design from 2007 until 2008, and convener for the Arts (and Design) Area Committee of Taiwan’s National Science Council from 2009 until 2011. She has been the editor-in-chief of the International Journal of Design (SCI, SSCI, AHCI) since 2007, a past president of the International Association of Societies of Design Research (IASDR), and a fellow of the Design Research Society, UK. Her research focuses on user interfaces for the Internet of Things, design innovation strategy and aesthetics of forms and intelligence.

Sara Clement is an industrial designer with a user-centred and empathic approach to design. After finishing her bachelor’s and master’s degree studies in Architecture and Industrial Design, respectively, at Aalborg University, Sara developed a professional career designing products with high technological complexity and many requirements in functionality, usability and ergonomics.

Since 2013, Sara has been the lead industrial designer at Marcus Pedersen. Throughout Sara’s working life, she has seen her excellence recognised with numerous design awards, such as the German Design Award in 2019 and the 2018 edition of the DesignEuropa Awards in the Small and Emerging Companies category, among others.

Sara is very interested in psychology and human behaviour and loves transforming complex problems into simple ones, thereby creating meaningful and innovative designs that have a positive impact on people’s lives.

Ragnar Gustafsson has been the Director General of the Benelux Office for Intellectual Property (BOIP) since 1 July 2019, after five years of service as the Deputy Director of General Affairs at the BOIP. Previously, he worked in several executive positions at Randstad, the Netherlands. He has also served in various managerial positions in ICT consultancy at Logica CMG. Ragnar holds an academic degree in international and private law, as well as a degree in marketing and economics.

Ragnar has a proven track record as a director in strategic management, HR, sales and information technology. In his current role he creates vision and strategy, and successfully implements new business strategy. With his strong focus on customer experience and operational excellence, he plans to take the BOIP to the next level in the coming years.

The BOIP is the official body for trade mark and design registrations in the Benelux region. It operates in three countries, Belgium, Luxembourg and the Netherlands, which creates unique business opportunities.

Alban Maggiar has chaired SMEunited since January 2020. He has been SMEunited’s Vice President since 2015 and in that role also headed its Economic and Fiscal Committee (2016). Within SMEunited he represented CPME, the French confederation of small and medium-sized enterprises.

Prior to that, Alban was the president of SYNADIET, the French organisation that united the French food supplement industry from 2005 until February 2015, and of EHPM (the European Federation of Associations of Health Product Manufacturers) from March 2013 until March 2016. For 30 years Alban Maggiar headed the French company CARRARE Laboratory, which specialises in yeasts, probiotics and botanical-based food supplements. He now runs Adelante, a consulting company.

Alban Maggiar holds a master’s degree in Business Law, an advanced master’s degree in Tax Law, and a bachelor’s degree in Literature. He also holds qualifications in the fields of finance and political science.

Nadja Roth is an industrial designer at Siemens Healthineers, designing complex medical devices in the field of medical imaging.

During her studies she gained experience in different product fields, such as kitchenware, home appliances, furniture and outdoor products, but soon discovered her passion for medical devices. In 2013 she graduated as an industrial designer at Hochschule Coburg in Germany and was honoured with the Mia Seeger Preis for her diploma thesis, where she designed a holistic product family concept for asthma treatment in childhood.

During her first years at Siemens Healthineers she was responsible for the industrial design and graphical user interface design of angiography and X-ray systems (e.g. ARTIS icono, ARTIS pheno — which has won many awards, including the Industry award at DesignEuropa 2018) in the Advanced Therapies business line. Here, she also worked as a design manager and handled the designs throughout the whole development and implementation process of the products.

Today, Nadja Roth is part of the Siemens Healthineers design team, working on industrial designs across a wide range of products within the Siemens Healthineers product portfolio. Together with her colleagues, she develops industrial design guidelines to consolidate one common look and feel among Siemens Healthineers products.

Srini Srinivasan is a highly accomplished designer and entrepreneur in creative design and technology development, with over 25 years of work experience in Silicon Valley, United States and India.

Presently, Srini is President of the WDO (World Design Organization) and is an active member of the IDSA, the professional body for industrial designers in the US.

Srini is the chairman and CEO of LUMIUM DESIGN, Inc., a Silicon Valley based, world class, award-winning product design company that has developed 300+ products in the consumer electronics, medical, industrial goods, security and surveillance domains. Srini also specialises in design and technology, providing design leadership and technical management to highly talented and multi-disciplined teams across global locations.

Srini is an adjunct professor of industrial design at Tongji College of Design & Innovation, Shanghai and a member of its International Advisory Board. He is on the Advisory Board of Indus Design School, Indus University and Wellingkar Institute of Management Development & Research, Mumbai, India.

Srini is the founder and managing partner at SOCRADAMUS Venture Partners, which is an early-stage venture advisory firm that invests and nurtures high-tech innovations from start-ups.

Srini has been a keynote speaker at several design conferences across the globe. He has been a jury member at several well-known international design awards events.

David Stone is Global Head of Intellectual Property at Allen & Overy. In addition to his busy IP litigation practice, David sits on the Designs Committee of the International Trademark Associate, and is a former board member of INTA and of MARQUES, the Association of European Brand Owners. David has represented users at the UKIPO, EUIPO and WIPO.

A graduate of the Universities of Sydney, Oxford and Cambridge, David’s ‘European Union Design Law: a Practitioners Guide (2nd edition)’ was published by Oxford University Press in January 2016. He is a Research Fellow of the Oxford Intellectual Property Research Centre, and also teaches on the Oxford IP Diploma course and the IP Magister Lvcentinvs course at the University of Alicante. David is on the editorial board of the Oxford Journal of Intellectual Property Law and Practice (OUP) and the European Intellectual Property Review (Sweet & Maxwell).

In 2017, David was appointed a Deputy High Court Judge to sit part time in the Chancery Division, Patents Court and Intellectual Property Enterprise Court.

Anna Szonyi began her career studying fine art, architecture and furniture design at Moholy-Nagy University of Art and Design in Budapest, the school of Erno Rubik (the creator of the Rubik's cube). Upon graduating from the Department of Architecture Anna moved to the United Arab Emirates (UAE) where she has spent seven years working as an architect and design manager. Her professional experience ranges from designing bespoke furniture and small scale architectural projects, like high end villas, to managing the design of new cities and large scale master plans.

Between 2017 and 2019 she ran a design gallery and design studio in Dubai Design District: AR. Gallery + Studio. In 2019 she shifted her focus exclusively to AR. Studio’s design projects and currently works between Dubai and Budapest.

When she designs her aim is to create beautiful, unique, functional spaces and objects by theoretical research and experimentation with systems, forms and materials. Her work is based on an idea-driven design methodology which allows the final concept to be original, aesthetically stunning, intelligently designed works that function well and that people enjoy. She designed the IDO bench, manufactured by French urban furniture maker Aubrilam, which was a finalist design in the Small and Emerging Companies category at the DesignEuropa Awards 2016.
