The Jury 2018

Luisa Bocchietto is President of the World Design Organization. She is an independent designer and architect, working across the public and private sector. Dr Bocchietto obtained her bachelor’s degree in Faculty of Architecture in Milan. During the course of her career, Dr Bocchietto has been President of Architects in her home town of Biella, a member of the Italian Council for Design, one of the founders of the China-Italy Design and Innovation Centre, and a member of the organising committee for World Design Capital 2008 Torino. She was national president of ADI, the Association of Industrial Design in Italy, from 2008 to 2014. From 2013 she has been a board member of ICSID, the International Council of Societies of Industrial Design, which changed its name to World Design Organization in 2017. Passionate about design and architecture, Luisa has contributed several scientific texts for various publications, has organized exhibitions and conferences, has cooperated as a visiting professor with universities and design schools, and has served as a juror on many notable awards and events.

Alicja Adamczak is President of the Patent Office of the Republic of Poland. Dr Adamczak received her PhD from the Law and Administration Faculty at the University of Warsaw. She is a member of the Administrative Council and the Budget and Finance Committee of the European Patent Organisation and of the Administrative Council of the Visegrad Patent Institute. She is the former President of the Polish Chamber of Patent Attorneys and the President of the National Board of Patent Attorneys. She is a qualified patent attorney, a legal advisor and researcher at the Kielce University of Technology. She has also authored many publications dealing with IP protection and has launched a series of significant initiatives aimed at promoting IP in her native Poland. Dr Adamczak is an active enthusiast of industrial design, promoting it in the government, in creative and business environments, and more widely in society.

Grégoire Bisson is the Director of The Hague Registry, at the World Intellectual Property Organization (Geneva). In this capacity, he is directly responsible for the management and development of the Hague Agreement for the International Registration of Industrial Designs. His previous positions with WIPO included heading up the Legal Service supporting the development of, and the operations under, the Madrid, Hague and Lisbon systems. He joined WIPO in 1995 after a short stint with the Canadian Trade Mark Opposition Board. Before that, he was Senior Legal Advisor with the Canadian Federal Government, overseeing in particular the drafting of the TRIPS implementing legislation: He also lectured on the legal aspects of transfer of technology at the University of Ottawa from 1992 to 1994. He has co-edited a book on this topic, and has published or contributed to many articles on various IP issues.

Franco Caimi is the Chief Executive Officer of Caimi Brevetti, one of the leading manufacturers of design furniture, accessories and acoustic systems for the workspace and contract markets. He is the Coordinator of the Companies Department of ADI-Associazione per il Disegno Industriale (Association for the Industrial Design) and Member of Giurì del Design (Jury of Design). Caimi Brevetti is a leading company in design innovation; the firm’s products have been displayed in museums and in design exhibitions in Italy and around the world. The company has won many awards since its foundation in 1949, including two Compasso d’Oro awards. Caimi Brevetti won the DesignEuropa Award 2016 in the Small and Emerging Companies category.

António Campinos is the President of the European Patent Office (EPO), a post he has held since 1 July 2018. A Portuguese national with a Master in Public Law and advanced European studies, he began his career in the Portuguese Ministry of Economy and Innovation in 1998. He was appointed Trade Mark Director of the Portuguese National Institute of Industrial Property (INPI) in 2000, and was elected its President in 2005. From 2005 to 2007 he headed the Portuguese Delegation to the Administrative Board of the European Union Intellectual Property (EUIPO), subsequently serving as its Chairman from 2008 to 2010. In parallel (from 2005 to 2010) he was head of the Portuguese Delegation at the Administrative Council of the EPO. In 2010, António Campinos was elected Executive Director of the EUIPO in Alicante (Spain), a position he held until June 2018.

Mr Campinos also served a five year term as President of the Administrative Council of the Centre d'Études Internationales de la Propiété Intellectuelle (CEIPI) at the University of Strasbourg. He was awarded the title of Doctor Honoris Causa from the University of Alicante in 2017.

Robin Edman is an independent strategic design consultant, working through his own company, Robin Edman Innovation. He is the former President of the Bureau of European Design Associations (BEDA) 2015-2017 and served as Chief Executive of SVID, the Swedish Industrial Design Foundation, between 2001 and 2017. He holds a degree in industrial design from Rhode Island School of Design, and joined AB Electrolux Global Design organisation in 1981. In parallel, he also started his own design consultancy, which he ran for the next eight years. In 1989 Robin joined the North American operation of Electrolux, serving as Vice-President of Industrial Design for the Frigidaire Company. During this period, he started and ran the Electrolux Global Concept Design Team, to forecast future user needs. Throughout Robin’s entire career he has worked towards integrating a better understanding of the importance of design from a user perspective. In 1997 Robin moved back to Stockholm as Vice President of Electrolux Global Design. He has served on the board, and been treasurer of, the International Council of Societies of Industrial Design (Icsid).

Janina Fey, born in Germany, works as a senior industrial designer for the German luxury brand Gaggenau, specialising in kitchen appliances. Her most important projects over the last few years have been the development of a new oven series and the redesign of the brand iconic EB333, a 90cm wide oven. For these projects she received several if design awards and the German design award for Excellent Product Design. She graduated in 2007 as an industrial designer from Burg Giebichenstein, University of Art and Design in Halle. For her Master’s degree, she conducted research on “the mystery of beauty” in an intercultural context. This research has resulted in beauty care products which extended the product range of the Japanese company Panasonic to the European market. Subsequently, she co-founded a start up in Munich, creating toys and an online community for children.

Joanna Leciejewska is a designer who works in the areas of industrial design, packaging design and graphic design. She is the owner and designer of her own firm, Joa Projekt. Further key areas of her work include lighting design and furniture design. She has received a number of top design awards, including the Red Dot Award, Must Have, TOP DESIGN award, Good Design and the Philips EKODESIGN award. Her work has been exhibited in Poznań, Warsaw, Wrocław, Milan, Frankfurt, Cologne, Bordeaux and Paris. In 2013, Joanna was named “Best Designer of the Year” by the Polish Institute of Industrial Design. Joanna graduated from the Faculty of Interior and Industrial Design at the Academy of Fine Arts in Poznań in the studio of Prof. Krzysztof Kwiatkowski and Innovation Management at the University of Social Sciences and Humanities.

David Stone is a partner in the London office of Allen & Overy, focusing primarily on trade marks and registered and unregistered design rights. In addition to his busy IP litigation practice, David sits on the Designs Committee of the International Trademark Associate, and is a former board member of INTA and of MARQUES, the Association of European Brand Owners. David has represented users at the UKIPO, EUIPO and WIPO. A graduate of the Universities of Sydney, Oxford and Cambridge, David’s European Union Design Law: a Practitioners’ Guide (2nd edition) was published by Oxford University Press in January 2016. He is a Research Fellow of the Oxford Intellectual Property Research Centre, and also teaches on the Oxford IP Diploma course and the IP Magister Lvcentinvs course at the University of Alicante. David is on the editorial board of the Oxford Journal of Intellectual Property Law and Practice (OUP) and the European Intellectual Property Review (Sweet & Maxwell). In 2017, David was appointed a Deputy High Court Judge to sit part time in the Chancery Division.

Anna Szonyi began her career studying fine art, architecture and furniture design at Moholy-Nagy University of Art and Design in Budapest, the school of Erno Rubik (the creator of the Rubik's cube). Upon graduating from the Department of Architecture Anna moved to the United Arab Emirates (UAE) where she has spent seven years working as an architect and design manager. Her professional experience ranges from designing bespoke furniture and small scale architectural projects, like high end villas, to managing the design of new cities and large scale master plans. In 2017 she partnered with the India-based design studio Apical Reform and she runs the Dubai arm of the company, a design gallery and design studio: AR. Gallery + Studio. When she designs her aim is to create beautiful, unique, functional spaces and objects by theoretical research and experimentation with systems, forms and materials. Her work is based on an idea-driven design methodology which allows the final concept to be original, aesthetically stunning, intelligently designed works that function well and that people enjoy. She designed the IDO bench, manufactured by French urban furniture maker Aubrilam, which was a finalist design in the Small and Emerging Companies category at the DesignEuropa Awards 2016.

Since 2005, Gemma Tost has been the Editorial Manager of On Diseño magazine, one of the most prestigious Spanish architecture and design publications. Based in Barcelona, On Diseño is characterized by its independent editorial content that has transformed the magazine into a benchmark in the culture of Spanish design over the last thirty eight years. Gemma Tost has been a member of the Board of Directors of ADI-FAD (Association of Industrial Designers). After working for the Italian company Miroglio (Vestebene group) as a printed fabric designer, she worked in different fields related to design and has written several articles about industrial design, interiors, arts and fashion. Gemma Tost studied Fashion Design at the EATM (Barcelona) and the Winchester School of Art (UK), followed by a Postgraduate in Fashion Communication and Journalism at IDEC (Universitat Pompeu Fabra, Barcelona) and a Postgraduate in Business Studies by the University of Barcelona.

Magnus Welander is CEO and President at Thule Group since 2010. He holds an MSc in Industrial Engineering and Management from the Institute of Technology at Linköping University. Previously, Mr Welander served as Business Area President Vehicle Accessories Europe & Asia of Thule Group. He has also served as President of Envirotainer AB and as Technical Director at Tetra Pak Australia and has held various management positions at Tetra Pak Italy. Under his leadership, Thule Group won the DesignEuropa Award 2016 in the Industry category.
