EUIPO Study on IPR contribution in Latin American countries

In August 2021, IP Key Latin America concluded its first phase. One of its main goals was to raise awareness of IP’s social and economic importance among the public, relevant institutions, and policymakers. The final days of the IP Key project saw the publication of a series of studies dedicated to measuring the economic contribution of IPRs in different countries within the region, including Mexico, Peru, Argentina, Uruguay and Chile. These studies follow the methodology of previous publications authored by the EUIPO and the European Patent Office (EPO) in the EU and the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) in the United States.

This paper (EN, ES) is a compilation of the main findings of these five reports for trade mark, patent, design and copyright-intensive industries, along with a comparison with the EU’s main results. These reports have demonstrated the importance of IPR in the region.

The paper gives a short description of the different elements of IPR registration; a comparison of the contribution of IPR-intensive industries and a short description of the economic contribution IPR plays in each country’s IPR-intensive industry.
Countries such as Mexico, Argentina, Chile and Peru, all have specific IPR intensive industries, from design, copyright, trade mark and patent, while Uruguay has the highest number of trade mark and patent applications per inhabitant, and the lowest percentage of trade marks, patents and designs registered by residents. All of this adds up to a very interesting combination of IPR intensive industries, and shows us how important IPR awareness is, for these countries.
